Scholarships Available for Union Families

San Antonio AllianceUncategorized

With the state of Texas severely cutting financial aid for college students, working families need all the help they can get to realize the dream of higher education. Under these circumstances, it is well worth your while to learn about two union scholarship programs that are now taking applications. The first one, the national 2012 Union Plus Scholarship program, offers $150,000 in awards. It is open for applications from union members, their spouses, and dependents from now through January 31, 2012.

To apply, visit UnionPlus.org/Education. This year’s application is entirely online—allowing students to complete their application over time and save their responses.

Applicants are required to submit essays of no more than 500 words describing their career goals, detailing their relationship with the union movement, and explaining why they are deserving of a union scholarship.

Individuals must be accepted into an accredited college or university, community college, or recognized technical or trade school at the time the award is issued. Graduate-school students are also eligible for Union Plus Scholarships. There is no requirement to have participated in any Union Plus benefit program in order to apply.

Since 1991, Union Plus has distributed more than $3.2 million in scholarships to working families. The second union scholarship program we want you to know about is the 2011-2012 Texas AFL-CIO Scholarship Program. This one is for high-school seniors whose parent or guardian is a member of a local union affiliated with the Texas AFL-CIO and with the area Central Labor Council. The application in this case also is due by January 31, 2012.
