San Antonio Alliance partners with First Book for books for SAISD students

San Antonio AllianceUncategorized

The San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel is launching a great partnership with First Book, an award-winning nonprofit that gets high-quality, brand-new books to children from low-income families.  We know that access to books is a primary factor in children becoming lifelong learners, and we also know that many of our SAISD students have little or no access to books at home.

The Alliance will work in partnership with the school district on the Books Across SAISD project, with a goal of distributing three books to every student in SAISD students – one prior to Winter Break, one prior to Spring Break, and one prior to the Summer Break.  We will also work to get every interested SAISD educator registered with First Book in order to have ongoing access to First Book’s deeply discounted prices on top kids’ books.

First Book distributes books through its online Marketplace, which gives teachers, schools, and education, community, and service programs the ability to purchase books at huge discounts, from 50-90% off retail prices.  The average price of a book in the Marketplace, which has around 3000 books, is between $2.50 and $3.  First Book also has its National Book Bank, which distributes millions of new books each year, for about the cost of a postage stamp per book.  The First Book National Book Bank connects leading publishing houses with programs serving children in need.  As the nation’s only clearinghouse for large-scale book donations, the First Book National Book Bank distributes 5-8 million books each year to programs where at least 70% of the children served are from low income or military families or Title I eligible schools.

If you would like to help with Books Across SAISD, please contact Peggy Pena
at 225-7174 or peggyp@sanantonioalliance.org.
The steering committee will be selecting the book titles for the distribution to SAISD students, helping to secure donations and volunteers for the project, helping to find warehouse space for storage of the books until distribution, and helping to determine possible pre- and post-distribution activities to make the book giveaway most impactful.  Please send any book suggestions, possible activities that go with great literature, or any suggestions to the Alliance. Together can we make this project a great success!
