San Antonio, Texas – The San Antonio Central Labor Council is proud to announce that Wheatley MiddleSchool in San Antonio Independent School District has been selected as a recipient of the AFL-CIO Adopt-A-School grant program. Wheatley Middle School will be awarded a $5,000 grant.
As students learn the history of our country, it is important that they are able to see the connections between workers’ rights and civil rights. The AFL-CIO Adopt-a-School grant program is designed to support classrooms and teaching staff who are teaching students about these connections, and how they influence our economy, by bringing in local labor leaders and workers’ rights activists to speak with students, bringing what feels like ancient history into today’s world for young people.
“We’re extremely proud to present this award and look forward to working with Wheatley Middle School to ensure that all students have access to quality education and that teachers have the resources they need to teach,” said Tom Cummins, President of the San Antonio Central Labor Council.
The San Antonio Central Labor Council presented the award to Wheatley Middle School at a special assembly Tuesday, January 21, 2014.
