On Monday night, the school board unanimously passed a resolution opposing the privatizing of district custodial and support services and reaffirming its commitment to district custodial and support services employees. Rumors regarding privatization, or outsourcing, had been rampant for weeks. Board member Debra Guerrero placed the resolution on the agenda so as to reassure employees that the district is not moving in the direction of privatization.
The Alliance had sent Board members a letter on March 31st reiterating its long-standing position against privatization. Alliance president Shelley Potter spoke at Monday’s Board meeting emphasizing that SAISD custodians and support personnel are invested in our district and our community and that many of them are parents, grandparents or other relatives of our students. Potter said, “They have pride in the work they do because they know it impacts our students.” Potter urged the Board to approve the resolution and say no to privatization.
