Last night, the SAISD school board approved a minimum salary increase of 2.5% for teachers (and others on the teacher schedule) for the 2014-15 school year. They increased the starting teacher salary to $49,000 for next school year. The Board also approved an increase of 1.5% of midpoint for all other employees. The Alliance plans to publish the details for each category of employees in the next few days.
Up until Monday afternoon, the administration’s proposal for teacher salaries included 2.5% for teachers through 19 years of experience but only 1.5% for teachers at 20 years and up. Alliance leaders made the argument that it was important to not only attract high quality teachers but also retain them. Alliance president Shelley Potter noted that our veteran teachers have a repertoire of experiences that help them to be effective teachers and that veteran teachers are also frequently teacher leaders. Late afternoon on Monday, the administration adjusted their proposal to include all teachers in the 2.5% increase.
The Alliance was the only organization to speak out on salaries at Monday’s Board meeting. Alliance president Shelley Potter urged the Board to keep in mind the needs of our paraprofessional and classified employees and pointed out that the 1.5% is 1.5% of a lower salary for those employees. Since SAISD classified and paraprofessionals do not have contracts, their salaries can be adjusted at any time. As the Board goes through the rest of the budget process, the Alliance will be pressing Board members to look for any possibilities for increasing the salaries of support personnel.
