Texas AFT asks you to send a letter in opposition to HB 2977 by Rep. Jason Villalba (R-Dallas). The bill would give the commissioner of education a blank check to define “performance criteria” for teacher evaluation based heavily, and unreliably, on students’ test scores. HB 2977 was expected to be voted on in a quick meeting of the House Public Education Committee today, but the committee never met. That means it is still timely to ask you to send in a letter opposing HB 2977and advising your legislators that students’ scores on achievement tests are invalid and unreliable measures for the purpose of evaluating a teacher’s performance. The best action the House committee could take on this bad bill is no action.
