From San Antonio Alliance President, Shelley Potter: Fellow SAISD teachers and support personnel welcome back! To those who are beginning their first year in SAISD, welcome! The San Antonio Alliance is the Consultation representative for non-administrative employees in SAISD. District employees elected the Alliance to be the official Consultation organization. This means our Alliance Consultation Team meets monthly with the administration to consult on matters that impact you in your day-to-day work.
The Alliance’s state affiliates, Texas AFT and TSTA blocked an attempt during the legislative session to eliminate the $500 state-mandated health-care supplement for support personnel. Since 2001, the $500 healthcare supplement has helped make health insurance more affordable for support personnel.
The Alliance—in collaboration with the SAISD, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the Department of Labor, and OSHA—spent four days this past week training almost 500 SAISD employees in CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation), First Aid, and the use of the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Participants received certifiable training and will now be prepared to handle any emergencies that may arise.
The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 2011 KIDS COUNT Data Book, just out recently, finds Texas mired in the bottom third among the states in children’s well-being. The latest annual data show 24% of Texas children, almost one out of every four, living in poverty – well above the rate in the rest of the country. A change in law and rules at the Texas Teacher Retirement System means that you had better make sure you receive and review your annual statement of TRS-covered service. The new law and rules require that any correction needed must be brought to the attention of TRS within five years, and failure to receive the annual statement does not extend that deadline.
