As you know, on September 5, the President rescinded DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and stripped legal status of young immigrants who have lived in the United States since childhood. We have many SAISD students, as well as some teachers and staff, who are DACAmented and therefore drastically impacted by this decision. These are our kids and our colleagues.
Doubtlessly the last few weeks have been stressful for our DACAmented students and staff, but there is help available for those whose permits are about to run out. However, the deadline for renewal is October 5, 2017 (next Thursday). This applies to those whose EADs expire between SEPTEMBER 5, 2017 and MARCH 5, 2018. Time is of the essence to get resources to those who are able to renew before the October deadline.
There may be a way to extend DACA and the DREAM Act. But this may take weeks or months, and it may not have the outcome that is the best for our students and staff. Right now the priority should be funneling resources to those who need it the most. There are a number of scholarships available for DACA recipients who cannot afford the $495 renewal fee.
Mission Asset Fund has a national scholarship with an online application. Informed Immigrant has a detailed list of local, state, and national scholarships on its webpage. It should be noted that RAICES of San Antonio is included on this list, and students and staff can contact them here regarding DACA renewal.
If you are able, please consider making a donation to one of these funds or to charitable groups providing assistance to DREAMers and DACAmented U.S residents. None of us can sit idly by and allow politics to destroy students’ and staff members’ lives and livelihoods.
