Last February in Consultation, the Alliance proposed a change to the SAISD administrative procedure on lesson plans. The Alliance team contended that the district’s procedure violated state law. Texas Education Code 11.164 says that a classroom teacher may only be required to prepare “a unit or weekly lesson plan that outlines, in a brief and general manner, the information to be presented during each period at the secondary level or in each subject or topic at the elementary level.” SAISD’s Administrative Procedure E3 required more than the law allowed. After having the attorneys review the situation, the district administration acknowledged that the administrative procedure was out of compliance and committed to making a change to the procedure.
The SAISD Policy and Administrative Procedure Committee reviewed language proposed by the Alliance and worked on finalizing a new procedure. The new procedure is completed and is now posted. Click here to review the new procedure.
The procedure states: “Written lesson plans are only required to outline in a brief and general manner the information to be presented during each period at the secondary level or in each subject or topic at the elementary level. ‘Brief is defined as ‘short in extent and length.’ ‘General’ is defined as ‘including main elements rather than details.’”
Lesson plans will now only have to include two components – objectives and learning activities – rather than the previous four components. Teachers will still be able to reference specific documents or resources and page numbers in order to minimize what they write in their lesson plans. So, for example, if a resource or document has the objectives and learning activities, a teacher could just write “TE p. 105” or “SAISD Curriculum Guide p. 85.” Under the procedure, there is no required format for lesson plans.
Planning for effective, engaging lessons is a vital part of the teaching process. Teachers can now focus more time and energy on the actual planning process and less time on writing and copying.
