Alliance Member Laura Alfaro Receives Volunteer of the Year Award

In late June, Alliance Member and media specialist for SAISD, Laura Alfaro, was recognized for working to help improve the San Antonio community. The Volunteer Center at United Way hosted the 21st Annual Volunteer of the Year Awards (VOYA) dinner at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Over 800 people attended the event to thank and congratulate local citizens such as Alfaro who have contributed so much to the community.

Alfaro has dedicated her life to children and literacy. For the last three years, Alfaro has volunteered endless hours to plan and prepare all the details for the Alliance's annual "Read Across America" event. Students, teachers and staff look forward to the event every year so they can sing Happy Birthday to the "Cat in the Hat." Each year, Alfaro adds a new, resourceful element to the program. This year, she nurtured a relationship with Barnes and Noble to have books donated to the students.

"It is important that we, as the adults in our children's and students' lives, model a level of appreciation of reading and learning that becomes an inspiration to them," said Alfaro. "I would challenge all of us to be the inspiration that molds their love of reading."

Thank you Laura Alfaro for your hardwork and dedication to students and families across SAISD!
